Hey!

I just finished my playthrough of the quick start guide, running a one-person adventure across three sessions with my Fiancée. I gave her Animon partner his voice, and she controlled the kid and everything the Animon did in combat, sans flavor.

It was a tremendous success! We both had a ton of fun, and she was actually a bit sorry to say goodbye to her little Animon pal at the end of it.

Since this was a really fun game, as soon as we finished the tutorial mission outlined in the quickstart guide, I bought the full rulebook.

Overall, I love how compact and accessible the rules are, with just enough meat on their bones to reward tactical thinking and teamwork. I also think the game, though generally intended to be played with multiple kid & Animon pairs, can work quite strongly with a DM who almost entirely voices the Animon partner, and a single player who controls their choices and actions in combat. I think that really leans into the strengths of the “focusing on kid/mon bond” vibes, though I’d also love the chance to try with multiple people, too, at one point.

Anyway, massive compliments to the game creators. This was really fun, easy to get into, easy to learn, and the worldbuilding elements, lean as they are, (and, gently, perhaps as similar to a certain digital monster series as they are) are the perfect building blocks for players to build their own adventures with. I very much hope to play this game again, now that I have access to the full rules.

One fun little thing I noticed–since I didn’t have the full rulebook, I didn’t know what my fiancée’s Animon partner was meant to be called. I picked the name “Luxirrel,” and then, in the full rulebook, I learned it was actually named “Luxen.” I felt quite silly when I realized it was meant to be a fox, not a squirrel! Still got the ‘Lux’ part, though.

I’ll be keeping an eager eye out for more Animon Story content.

If you’re on the fence about buying the full rulebook, use the quickstart guide. You’ll know if you like it from that–and you probably will.

Either way, personally, I cannot state enough how enjoyable, flexible, and fun the system is. It does not pretend to aspire to be a framework for epic tales of gods and kings–it is perfectly suited for telling small, kind, stories of kids and their ’mons.

Exactly what I wanted.👍

This is amazing to hear, thank you very much for leaving such a lovely comment! I hope you continue to have a great time with the game.

Question about the Legend's Wake expansion:

Is the combat system expanded at all? The one thing I felt really underwhelming in the core book was your options in building attacks. Particularly, the lack of ability to combine effects.

(1 edit)

Heya, there are indeed additions to combat including new attack Effects that can be chosen.

In terms of combining Effects, each Signature Attack can have up to three Effects on it as per core rules, just in case that's what you're looking for in terms of combining.
